They go to one of India’s best ultrasound screening programs and usually anomaly scan is done by between 10 – 13 weeks and again between 18 – 19 weeks. There are double marker and triple marker tests done and in case if there is abnormality detected which is gone past and we take the patients, the genetic parents into confidence.

All procedures or any termination is done taking the genetic parent’s consent. The surrogates on signing up are already sign consent saying that if the baby is abnormal and under Indian laws up to 20 weeks, the termination of pregnancy is allowed. Then usually there is no problem.”

Prenatal tests are performed to keep a check on the baby’s growth. The doctor explains that an anomaly scan is done twice. First scan is done when the foetus is 10-13 weeks old and second scan, between 18-19 weeks. The double and triple marker tests are also performed, so that if any abnormality prevails on, it can be handled during the early weeks of pregnancy.

The surrogate consents to a contract saying that if the baby is abnormal, pregnancy termination may be required. The doctor also educates about the Indian law which states that abnormal baby growth may call for pregnancy termination, only before completion of 20 weeks.
